This statement makes policy recommendations as part of the federal government's public consultation process. It includes a vision of Just Transition (also published in a separate statement in Feb. 2016), and urges conversion to renewable energy sources and renewable electricity. It calls for an accelerated coal phase-out, with transition assistance for affected workers and communities.
The submission summarizes some statistics re Canada's auto industry, and lays out the union's position in favour of vehicle emission standards, alternative fuel vehicles, and manufacture of transit vehicles.
Concluding paragraph: "Bill C-30 must set a clear framework for a national action plan to meet specified greenhouse gas reduction targets, including hard emissions caps for large final emitters and an emission trading system, a framework for new regulatory standards, establishment of mandates for funds to support a green jobs/green industrial strategy, including a Climate Change Investment Fund and funds for Just Transition. Funding for climate change programs and related tax reforms as highlighted above should be included in the 2007 Budget."
