This paper provides the EPA Combined Heat and Power Partnership’s recommended methodology for calculating fuel and CO2 emissions savings from CHP compared to single heat and power. This methodology recognizes the multiple outputs of CHP systems and compares the fuel use and emissions of the CHP system to the fuel use and emissions that would have normally occurred in providing energy services through SHP.
This guide is directed to municipal staff, planners, and politicians. This guide describes CHP, also known as cogeneration, which refers to the simultaneous production of electricity and thermal energy from a single fuel source. This guide includes an overview of the benefits of CHP systems, costs, sources of funding, and case studies.
