Map of North and South America, originally printed as part of the atlas titled Atlas historique, genealogique, chronologique et geographique de A. LeSage (Comte de Las Cases) in 1825. Text surrounding the map provides description of geographic characteristics, communications by sea and river, and history. There is particular focus on the history of explorers, including Lewis & Clark, Columbus, Cortez, and Pizarro (with their travel routes outlined on the map itself). Major cities, bodies of water are labelled. There are notes throughout the map pointing out various features. National boundaries are denoted by the countries being filled in with different colours. The short-lived country of the United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata can be seen in South America. Table in the lower left corner provides descriptions of the government, physical terrain, history of colonization, agriculture and natural resources, and characteristics of the natural landscape of the countries on the map.

"Front side of a map of North and South America published around 1552 and appearing in the atlas Cosmographiae universalis. Map is beautifully illustrated but not remotely to scale. Latin and German text highlight various features. Printed at top along upper border: ""Novae Insulae XXVI. Nova Tabula."" Printed on verso: Latin text and page number: ""Novarum insularum description….54."" Printed within present-day South America: ""Nouus orbis…Die Nüw Welt."" North America is labeled as ""Terra florida"" and ""Francisca"" with a small area marked as ""C. Britonum"" on the east coast of Francisca. Yucatan is depicted as an island and the lake of Temistan is shown emptying into the Gulf of Mexico. Also included are the Straits of Magellan. Magellan's ship ""Victoria"" is depicted in the Pacific Ocean. A cannibal in Brazil, the Portuguese flag in the South Atlantic, and the Spanish flag in the Caribbean Sea are also shown. Of note, the mythical Sea of Verrazano is shown above ""Terra florida"" connecting to the Pacific Ocean where Japan or ""Zipangi"" and several small Pacific islands next to ""India Superior"" exist. Contains printed border of bars representing latitude and longitude."
