- Polish passengers on the Batory jump ship in London
- Description
- "Polish passengers on the Batory jump ship in London. Twenty-four passengers on a pleasure cruise from behind the Iron Curtain have "jumped ship" in London. Some have asked for political asylum -- and 11 more are seeking asylum in Denmark. The 14,287-ton Polish liner Batory, with 400 passengers, docked at Greenwich last Friday. She sailed again on Sunday night for Amsterdam, but the visit there was cancelled because of bad weather, and the ship called at Copenhagen instead. In London, the Home Office said last night: "Seven Poles have applied to us for long-term extensions of their permits for a variety of reasons, some political. Others have been given short-term extensions, for reasons of ill-health, or because they want to stay longer with relatives." Two of the refugees, Mr. Stefan Berlinski, a 32-year-old dentist, and his 27-year-old wife Czeslawa, a dental mechanic, said "We don't want to go back to Poland. Life is impossible under the Communists. We borrowed money from all our friends for the cruise fare, just to get away." Ten Poles of German extraction sought the help of the German Embassy in London. An official said: "All wanted to be repatriated to Western Germany, where they have relatives. We have sent them there." Picture shows: Mr. Stefan Berlinski and his wife Czeslawa who jumped ship in London."

- Statistics from World Refugee Year
- Description
- "Waiting for food--Refugee children wait for food at an emergency feeding station established by the government at Lavrion, Greece. These children, Greek refugees from Romania are typical of millions of refugees around the world. An estimated 20,000 live in 100 European refugee camps. Another 100,000 are outside the camps; there are 1,000,000 Chinese refugees in Hong Kong and another million displaced Arabs. The United Nations, in an effort to call attention to the problem an in hope of solving much of it, has sponsored World Refugee Year, which ends in June. The Canadian government has agreed to sponsor 100 tuberculosis refugees and their families from Europe. Such TB patients would not normally be permitted entry into Canada."
