Letter from James Allan to Vivien Beer, August 28th 1916
Consists of a letter written to Vivien Beer by Captain James R. Allan. Item includes envelope. Transcription is as follows: 9.20pm Monday - night, August 28th., 1916. My own darling Vivien:- Darlingest girlie I hardly know how to describe to you how happy I am tonight. I received three letters from the dearest, sweetest little girlie in all the world by the mail today, which is the cause of all my joy, 'cause in those letters you were so frank my own sweetheart you simply carried me off my feet. Now my darling I will never doubt you the least little bit again. The reason lovie mine I asked all the things I did was not that I #2 doubted your love for me, but I just wanted you to tell me in your own dear frank way just how much you loved me, and darling you have more than answered my questions. O my own precious sweetheart I know you understand just how deeply I love you and on my part I realize how deeply you love me and how happy it makes me. Stop writing to you, suddenly, my dear. My own dear sweetheart I will always write to you because I love you with all my heart and love. Break your #3 heart lovie mine. Never! Vivien dear if I was ever low enough to cause you unnecessary pain or to break the heart of such a dear darling, true, loving, confiding and frank girlie as you are, would absolute cover my head for shame and lie down and die. But precious lovie why continue in this strain. I does not tend to cheer does it darling mine, but I have said it so you will know that I love you and you only and dearie mine I couldn't bear to see you suffering pain, especially if my fickleness #4 had been the cause of your sorrow. O my darling you are dearer to me than anything else in all the world. You say dear "all my love is yours and I belong to you and no one else." You darling, to make such a frank confession, such a spontaneous unconditional surrender of your all to me and my own sweetheart I on my part confess that I belong to you and that all my love is yours. When you are mine and I am yours. Dreaming of you, that's all I do, sweetheart for you I am pining; And in your eyes, blue as the skies, I can see the love light softly gleaming. #5 That was a very pretty song, the words of which you quoted in one of your letters. "Dearest, my heart is dreaming. Dreaming of you." It is verily a true message of love darling mine. My own love it is asking you to be happy, you say, when I ask you to wait for me. What a ring of real trueness there is in that confession, and my darling it filled my heart to overflowing and absolutely rooted out forever any semblance of a doubt. Vivien I consider you one of the noblest of girls and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for putting your whole trust and #6 confidence in me, and darling you will never be sorry you have done so. Now listen dearie mine those things you call 'mean' I absolutely dismissed from my thoughts months ago and please dearie mine don't you worry over them 'cause I tell you honestly they didn't make the slightest difference in my love for you, not the 'tiniest' bit. So 'cheero dearie' I'll soon be home, please God, and with a whole body. Vivien, that was the most noble, self-sacrificing offer I have ever had made to me. I mean when you said you would love me just the #7 same even were I to come home disabled. O darling my heart is to[sic] full for words. Now I know how much you care for me and sweetheart how happy it makes me. You are the noblest charactered girl God ever put breath into and my darling I won't write of things that pain you any more. It is good of you to speak as you did because, as you say, one never knows what may happen, But let us not "cross our bridges before we come to them." I will only say that I at all times try to do my #8 duty fully and if in the execution of my duty I am hit it will be a thing that can't be helped. But don't you worry dear heart 'cause I'm alright and will return to you ok if it be the Will of God. Darling when you said you would die if anything happened to me I realized just what love means to you and I am going to ask you to forgive all my careless phrases that hurt you. O my own precious sweetheart I love with all the love it is possible for a human heart and soul to have. Let us both be happy i.x. then lovie dear and not mention petty things and hurtful things again. Remember dearie mine that; 'I am yours and your are mine' and we will be true to each other and happy in the knowledge of each other's love. Now isn't this a love letter lovie mine. I love writing to you 'cause I can pour out my heart to you and you understand me too darling. I hear Roumania[sic] has declared war on Austria and Italy on Germany. Good for Roumania[sic]. Another upholder of x. human liberty. Her coming in will certainly shorten this war's length to some considerable degree. [Have] been pretty busy today. Paid the last of my brigade sections this morning and had quite a few men in this afternoon for remittances, pay, new paybooks &c. The weather has been pretty good today. Just two light showers. Went for a nice walk tonight but sweetheart I was alone. Wish you had been with me 'cause then I would have been xi. so happy. Darlingest girlie I want to tell you again that I love you with all the love my heart and soul are capable of and I will be true to you for ever and will never doubt your love for me again and will just call you my very ownest. Your own darling, Jim LOVE [written in small 'x's] Yes dear the above is the way to write kisses and I send you lots of them. Your ownest, Jim.
